Q&A: How do I vape CBD oil?
January 12, 2019
CBD oil is all the rage, and why not? It’s an organic, non-toxic treatment for insomnia, anxiety, pain, inflammation and other conditions. Delivering the benefits of cannabis, without the high, CBD is now showing up in everything from tinctures and edibles to coffee and bath bombs. But what’s the best way to take CBD? When you want instant relief, nothing is as fast as vaping CBD, and there are a couple of ways to do this.
Q: Does vaping CBD get you high?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical in the cannabis plant that can affect mood and create a relaxed, non-anxious effect, but it does results in an intoxicating effect like the THC in cannabis. Most CBD is derived from industrial hemp, which is not bred to be high in THC.
Q: How do CBD vape pens work?
Many companies offer pen-style vaporizers. They are relatively cheap, at $30 and up for a pen that typically contains 100 doses. A pen-style vaporizer will have a tip that contains the CBD oil; this is the part that you suck on to draw out the CBD vape. The tip will attach to a longer barrel that contains a battery and a heating element. (The barrel can be recharged by plugging it into a USB port with a special adapter.) Sucking on the tip will pull the oil over the heating element and convert it to vapor, which you inhale.
Q: Can I put CBD oil into my vape mod?
Handheld vaporizers, often referred to as mods, can be used to vape CBD oil, if the CBD oil has been formulated for that purpose (meaning it will contain a carrier liquid that converts to vapor, as CBD in it’s natural concentrated state will be crystalline). A mod has a tank, into which you would put the CBD oil, and a coil, where the CBD oil will be heated into vapor before you draw it into your lungs.
Q: What’s the difference between full-spectrum CBD oil and an isolate?
CBD is one of more than 100 compounds in cannabis. Scientists have documented an ‘entourage effect,’ through which these compounds work together, synergistically, and with the aromatic terpenes in the plant, to have certain effects on the body. A full-spectrum, or whole-plant formulation of CBD oil will include various compounds and terpenes, while an isolate includes only the CBD molecule by itself. Studies have shown that whole-plant formulations can have more medicinal efficacy than CBD in isolate form.
Q: Should I be concerned about propylene glycol (PG) in my CBD vape?
As noted above, CBD in its concentrated form will crystallize, so manufacturers of CBD vape products have formulated it with carrier liquids or solvents, including propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) so it will vaporize when heated. PG can decompose into formaldhyde when heated but that happens at higher temperatures than required for vaping. Nonetheless, it makes sense to pay close attention to the ingredients in any formulation you intend to vape, and to look for formulations that contain safe additives, if any. For instance, some vapes contain medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil, which is considered safer than PG.
Q: There are so many CBD vape products out there — how do I find one that is safe and effective?
When UFC fighter Nate Diaz sipped on a CBD vape pen after a fight in 2016, he helped kick off a trend that it seems still hasn’t peaked. If a high-performance professional athlete vapes CBD right after a fight, maybe there' something to it, right? Today dozens of companies offer CBD vape products, some of them have not been in business very long. When deciding on a vape, do your research. Look them up and try to find:
- An address and phone number
- Certificates of Analysis (these are test results on the purity and potency of their products)
- Reviews from real people (these can be faked of course, but a reputable brand will have many reviews, and you can usually tell if they are authentic)
- Ask friends for recommendations, and / or look at sites that review and rank CBD oil products
Q: Does Kannaboomers recommend CBD oil vape products?
We have tried many CBD products and based on the transparency of the brands and the quality of their products, we prefer Vape Bright for pen-style vaping, and Respira from Elixinol for vaping with a mod.
