Vaping CBD oil: pen-style cartridge vs mod
May 6, 2018
When you're suffering, you want relief. That's why vaping CBD oil is becoming more popular: Vaping is the fastest way to get your CBD oil medicine — whether for anxiety, arthritis or another condition — into your bloodstream, where it can start to give you relief.
As with smoking, vaping enables you to bypass your digestive system and let your lungs become the delivery system. If you’re comfortable with exposing your lungs to the carrier liquids that have to be added to CBD oil to make it vape-able, (more on that in another post) then you have about a kazillion options.
Pre-filled pen style cartridges: cheap and easy
Pre-filled pen-style CBD vaporizers are offered by many dozens of companies, some established, some upstarts. (Scroll down to see our favorite brand.) You can find these online and in vape stores, from about $30 and up. (There are many THC pen-style vaporizers available too.)
These pre-filled pen-style vaporizers really are easy to use: You just screw the tip / cartridge containing the CBD oil onto the barrel. The barrel contains a battery that can be recharged with a USB plug. Suck on the tip and the battery generates enough heat to convert the liquid CBD into vapor, and you get a hit that you can inhale into your lungs and then blow out. (If you hit it repeatedly and rapidly, it will get hotter.)
Pros of pre-filled pen-style CBD oil vaporizers:
- Simple and super-easy to use
- Relatively inexpensive
- Discreet, fits in pocket or purse
- Choice of flavors
- Good way to try out vaping
- No control over the temperature (which you want to be at the lowest point at which vapor is created)
Vaping CBD oil in a mod
You can also vape CBD oil in a mod. These palm-sized ‘mods’ include a tank, a bigger battery, and a coil. You can buy a mod for vaping CBD starting at about $50 or so, online at a shop like VaporNation, or in your neighborhood vape shop. These units are favored by dedicated vapers, who might be using a flavored vape juice that contains nicotine. Some CBD companies are making CBD oil tinctures that will work with mods (our favorite CBD vaping formulation is listed below). If you're going to go this route, make sure the tincture is formulated for vaping, otherwise it may damage your mod, and you won't get any vape.
Pros of mod vaporizers for CBD:
- You can control the temperature
- Vape your choice of CBD oil
- Probably more economical over time
- Bulkier than the pen-style vaporizers
- Maintenance is required; you occasionally have to change the coil and refill the tank
What's right for you? If you're curious and want to try vaping before you invest in a mod and a tincture, then it makes sense to try at least one pen-style unit.
As with other forms of cannabis, the effects of vaping are going to vary from person to person. You may find a vaporizer that works well for you right away, or you may want to try various brands, or some that contain more than the trace amounts of THC that are in most CBD oil formulations. It may take some experimentation before you find a unit, either pen-style or mod, that gives you reliable relief.
Our favorite pen-style CBD vaporizer
As of this writing, our favorite pen-style CBD vaporizer is the Thrive from Vape Bright. It's drop-dead simple to use: As described above, screw the filter tip onto the rechargeable barrel and you're good to go. Thrive from Vape Bright has no propylene glycol (PG) and it has cannabis terpenes added, so it tastes great (if you like the taste and smell of good-quality cannabis). Hit it several times and you will be relaxed but not stoned.
Our favorite vape mod for CBD
We were curious about CBD oil in a vape mod, so we tried vaping Respira from Elixinol in a Smok Baby Beast. Like Vape Bright, we found the Respira to be very flavorful. We picked up the Smok at a local vape shop for about $60. The mod requires some maintenance, you have to clean the tank and replace the coil now and then. But using a mod for vaping CBD you gain the ability to control the temperature at which you're vaping, and you do generate bigger clouds of vape, if that's important. Again, the effect is a sense of relaxation, without getting stoned.
Vaping can be an effective way to get medicine into you fast, which is critical when you are suffering from chronic pain or other conditions that require immediate relief. For many of us, it's a sensible alternative to dangerous medications including the opioids that too many doctors are still prescribing. Until the medical profession catches up, it's up to you to
